August 2008: The Secretariat of the UN Forum on Forests (UNFF) has called for the submission of national information on the
implementation of the Non-Legally Binding Instrument on All Types of Forests
(NLBI) and progress towards the achievement of the four Global Objectives on
Forests.
13 August 2008: A UN-backed expert group, the Steering Board on Sustainable Biofuels (RSB), has endorsed a draft sustainability standard that would evaluate the economic, social and environmental effects of biofuels over their entire life-cycle.
12 August 2008: The Permanent Missions of Pacific Small Island
Developing States (PSIDS) and co-sponsoring States are convening a discussion
on a draft UN General Assembly resolution on the threat of climate change to
international peace and security resolution on 15 August 2008, at UN
Headquarters in New York, US.
12 August 2008: A two-week course on Sustainable Communities has commenced in Bangkok, Thailand, bringing together 28 urban professionals representing academia, NGOs, local
authorities and central government agencies from 15 African and Asian
countries.
7 August 2008: The Secretariat of the Convention on
Biological Diversity (CBD) has notified organizations participating in the
Biodiversity Indicators Partnership about the timetable for preparing the third
edition of the Global Biodiversity Outlook (GBO-3) and has invited these
organizations to make the latest scientific information available for the
Outlook.
6 August 2008: The Secretariat of the Convention on Biological Diversity (CBD) has invited submissions regarding experiences in the
development and application of tools relevant to the sustainable production and
use of biofuels, as well as relevant information from research on, and
monitoring of, the positive and negative impacts of the production and use of
biofuels on biodiversity and related socioeconomic aspects, including those
related to indigenous and local communities.
11 August 2008: The International Atomic Energy Agency
(IAEA) and the Food and Agriculture Organization of the UN (FAO) are organizing
an International Symposium on Induced Mutations in Plants, from 12-15 August
2008, in Vienna, Austria. The event will bring together scientists to focus on
the latest innovations aimed at improving crop productivity in an effort to
solve the food and energy crises.
August 2008: The Co-operative Programme on Water and Climate
(CPWC) is coordinating two Water and Climate Days, on 20 and 21 August 2008, as
part of the upcoming World Water Week being held in Stockholm, Sweden, from
17-23 August 2008.
August 2008: The Center for International Forestry Research
(CIFOR) has announced that registration is open for participation in Forest Day
2 , which is to be held on 6 December 2008 during the fourteenth Conference of
the Parties to the UN Framework Convention on Climate Change (UNFCCC), in
Poznan, Poland.
12 August 2008: On the occasion of International Youth Day,
UN Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon underlined that climate change is happening
and, if unaddressed, could hinder efforts towards the Millennium Development
Goals and threaten peace and security.
