21 August 2008: The IPCC National Greenhouse Gas Inventory
Programme (NGGIP) has produced a short introduction to the IPCC 2006
Guidelines, entitled “Primer.” This Primer is suitable for users of the 1996
guidelines who wish to understand the changes in the new 2006 Guidelines and to
start using them, and for those who are compiling inventories for the first time.
21 August 2008: In accordance with COP Decision IX/16, the
Secretariat of the Convention on Biological Diversity (CBD) has issued a
notification to request Parties to submit views on ways to integrate
biodiversity considerations into climate-change related activities by 1 October
2008.
20 August 2008: The Secretariat of the Convention on
Biological Diversity (CBD) has announced that a regional workshop for countries
of the Caribbean region on capacity-building for national biodiversity
strategies and action plans, mainstreaming of biodiversity and the integration
of climate change will be held in Trinidad and Tobago, from 3-7 November 2008.
18 August 2008: The Secretariat of the Convention on
Biological Diversity (CBD) has published a joint-quarterly report on the
administration of the Convention, which contains a summary of key activities
implementing the decisions of the Conference of the Parties and other relevant
matters from 1 January-31 March and from 1 April-30 June 2008.
19 August 2008: In a message delivered by Noeleen Heyzer, Executive Secretary, Economic and Social Commission for Asia and the Pacific, to the Pacific Islands Forum summit meeting, which is taking place until 21 August 2008 in Alofi, Niue, UN Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon has announced the creation of an Inter-Agency Climate Change Centre for coordinated UN support to Pacific Island Countries and regional organizations, in partnership with the Government of Samoa.

August 2008: The revised draft of the Pan-European
Guidelines for Afforestation and Reforestation in the context of the UNFCCC
will be considered by the Ministerial Conference on the Protection of Forests
in Europe (MCPFE)/Pan-European Biological and Landscape Diversity Strategy
(PEBLDS) drafting meeting, which will convene from 16-17 September 2008, in
Malahide, Ireland.

Harvested Wood Products in the Context of Climate Change, to be held from 9-10
September 2008, in Geneva, Switzerland.
August 2008: The Global Partnership Initiative for Plant Breeding Capacity Building (GIPB), a platform and partnership of public, private and civil society institutions hosted by the UN Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO), in collaboration with the FAO Inter-Departmental Working Group on Bioenergy, has called for expanded, up-to-date information on genetic resources and breeding of selected underutilized species, together with detailed analysis of their potential as bioenergy crops adaptable to sustainable smallholder production systems.
