Solutions for Disaster Management and Emergency Response for the Pacific
Region' to be held in Suva, Fiji, from 16-19 September 2008.
16 July 2008: The 69th UN Economic Commission for Europe's (UNECE) Committee on Housing and Land Management is scheduled to take place from 22-23 September in Geneva, Switzerland.

2008: The World Business Council for Sustainable Development (WBCSD) and IUCN
have published a report entitled “Agricultural Ecosystems, Facts and Trends.”
The Report presents facts and figures on trends in agricultural production and
consumption to help governments, farmers, consumers and industry better
understand the challenges facing the sustainable management of agricultural
ecosystems, such as meeting demands from a fast-growing world population,
adapting to climate change impacts, and managing the natural resources of an
increasingly depleted planet.
July 2008: Through its Global Information and Early Warning System on Food and Agriculture (GIEWS), the UN Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO) provides regularly updated information on
the current situation of global agriculture and food security.
Climate change is a challenge that threatens human wellbeing and sustainable development worldwide, with particularly severe risks for the most poor and vulnerable countries and groups of society. This is now virtually uncontested, as uncontested as the need for urgent and concerted action to confront this challenge. The need to act has indeed acquired a new dimension and urgency following the publication of the Fourth Assessment Report of the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC). While some differences of opinion remain as to how to go about it, there is an ongoing process, under the UNFCCC and its Kyoto Protocol, that we all support and which is expected to lead to a major agreement by the end of 2009.
24 July 2008: PostEurop, a
Restricted Union representing 48 European public postal operators, has agreed
to form a joint technical committee with the Universal Postal Union's (UPU)
Sustainable Development Project Group, which will establish measures to reduce the
sector's carbon dioxide emissions.
24 July 2008: The Economic and Social Council (ECOSOC) concluded the
work of its general segment, adopting 15 resolutions and 8 decisions, including
on strengthening the coordination of emergency humanitarian assistance.
23 July 2008: In a 23 July 2008 Notification, the
Secretariat of the Convention on Biological Diversity (CBD) is inviting parties
and relevant organizations to provide information on the status and trends of,
and threats to, mountain biological diversity, and progress made in the
implementation of the Programme of Work on Mountain Biological Diversity for
consideration by the fourteenth meeting of the Subsidiary Body on Scientific,
Technical and Technological Advice, tentatively scheduled to be held in
May/June 2010 in Bonn, Germany.

2008: Opening the UN Economic and Social Council (ECOSOC) discussion on ‘mainstreaming
a gender perspective into all UN policies and programmes, women and
development, and the advancement of women,' Rachel Mayanja, Special Adviser to the Secretary-General on
Gender Issues and Advancement of Women, noted the particular vulnerability of
women to climate change and the food crisis.
