2 September 2008: Addressing the World Water Congress, which
is taking place from 1-4 September 2008, in Montpellier, France, Michel
Jarraud, Secretary-General of the World Meteorological Organization (WMO),
noted that agriculture, energy, tourism and health will be among the sectors
most affected by the impacts of climate change on water resources.
2 September 2008: The newest issue of the World Climate
Research Programme's (WCRP) electronic newsletter has been released.
1 September 2008: Addressing the Water Tribune at the
International Expo, which is taking place in Zaragoza, Spain, from 14 June to
14 September 2008, under the theme “Water and Sustainable Development,” UN
Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon recalled the UN's commitment to the protection
and adequate management of water resources, as well as the water-related
Millennium Development Goals (MDGs).
September 2008: The Expert Group Meeting on Advancing Industrial Energy Efficiency in the Post-2012 Framework will meet from 22-23 September 2008, in Washington, DC, US. The meeting is organized by the UN Industrial Development Organization (UNIDO) and International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA).

(UNEP) Executive Director and UN Under-Secretary General, spoke to the
Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC) on 31 August 2008.
31 August 2008: The celebration of the twentieth anniversary of the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC) and its twenty-ninth
plenary Session are convening in Geneva, Switzerland, until 4 September 2008.
29 August 2008: The International Symposium on Climate
Change and Food Security in South Asia, which met from 25-30 August 2008, in
Dhaka, Bangladesh, and was co-sponsored by Ohio State University, the World
Meteorological Organization, the UN Food and Agriculture Organization, the UN
Economic and Social Commission for Asia and the Pacific, the University of
Dhaka and the Government of Bangladesh, adopted a Declaration and
recommendations towards minimizing the short- and long-term vulnerability of
the South Asian region to climate change.
The UN Environment Programme (UNEP) and the
World Glacier Monitoring Service (WGMS) launched a new facts and figures report
on glaciers and ice caps during a side event on 1 September 2008, in Geneva,
Switzerland, during the 29th plenary session of the Intergovernmental
Panel on Climate Change (IPCC). “Global Glacier Changes: Facts and Figures”
presents recent fluctuations of glaciers and ice caps and underlines an overall
trend of glaciers' retreat. Wilfried Haeberli, Director of WGMS, noted that
glaciers are unique demonstration objects of global climate change.
2 September 2008: The Third High Level Forum on Aid
Effectiveness is taking place from 2-4 September 2008, in Accra, Ghana. Over
100 high-level country representatives, as well as heads of bilateral and
multilateral development agencies, donor organizations, and civil society
organizations, will discuss ways to increase the transparency of aid and make
it more results-oriented.
31 August 2008: Speaking on the occasion of the twentieth
anniversary of the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC) and the
opening of its twenty-ninth Plenary session, Roberto Acosta, Coordinator, UN
Framework Convention on Climate Change (UNFCCC), on behalf of Yvo de Boer,
UNFCCC Executive Secretary, underlined the IPCC's role in global climate change
policies and the need for public understanding of climate change to
significantly strengthen international action to tackle this challenge and reach
an ambitious response in Copenhagen at the UN climate change meeting in
December 2009.
