IISD RS Meeting Coverage
This Organisation for Economic Co-operation and Development (OECD) forum will address several issues related to the current financial crisis, as well as how to incorporate green-growth and climate change in the response to the crisis.
This preparatory meeting will feed its results into the annual summit of the Group of Eight most industrialized nations (G8).
Event: Fifth Urban Research Symposium: Cities and Climate Change: Responding to the Urgent Agenda [viewed]
The symposium, supported by the World Bank, OECD, UN-HABITAT, UNFPA and other donors, will address the impacts of city and urban growth on climate change; measuring and anticipating the consequences of climate change on urban quality of life, city assets, and local and national economies; and assessing alternatives to increase the resilience of cities and related costs and incentives required for successful implementation. The Symposium is structured around five broad research clusters that represent the most relevant issues faced by cities and peri-urban areas on climate change.
5 May 2009: The UNFCCC Secretariat has released the US Input to the Negotiating Text for Consideration at the Sixth Session of the Ad Hoc Working Group on Long-term Cooperative Action under the Convention (AWG-LCA 6), in which it supports a Copenhagen agreed outcome that “reflects both common and differentiated elements, is pragmatic, and recognizes the diversity of countries' circumstances and opportunities,” and expresses its commitment to reaching a strong international agreement in Copenhagen. The submission contains sections on mitigation, adaptation, technology and financing.
6 May 2009: The Clean Development Mechanism (CDM) Afforestation and Reforestation (A/R) Working Group has released the report of its 24th meeting, held from 29 April-1 May 2009 in Bonn, Germany. During the meeting, the Working Group considered, inter alia, requests for clarification of the application of approved baseline and monitoring methodologies, and draft new small-scale methodologies for A/R CDM project activities.
CBD Secretariat's April Bulletin of Activities Highlights Biodiversity and Climate Change Issues [viewed]
5 May 2009: The Secretariat of the Convention on Biological Diversity (CBD) has issued its monthly Bulletin of Activities for April 2009. Among others, the Bulletin highlights the outcomes of the meeting of the Ad Hoc Technical Expert Group (AHTEG) on biodiversity and climate change, held from 18-22 April 2009, in Helsinki, Finland and a new publication on “Indigenous Peoples and Traditional Knowledge related to Biological Diversity and Responses to Climate Change in the Arctic Region.”
Observers will be allowed at these informal meetings of the Ad Hoc Working Group on Long-term Cooperative Action under the Convention (AWG-LCA) and the Ad Hoc Working Group on Further Commitments for Annex I Parties under the Kyoto Protocol (AWG-KP).
This event will be organized around the theme “Implications of the Global Economic Crisis for Africa.” Economic deliberations will be closely linked to social and environmental issues including food security, climate change, healthcare and education.
