November 2008: The Steering Committee of the UN Economic
Commission for Europe (UNECE) Energy Efficiency 21 (EE21) project will hold the
12th session of the Ad Hoc Group of Experts on Energy Efficiency Investments
for Climate Change Mitigation in Geneva, Switzerland, on 19 December 2008.
14 November 2008: The 63rd Session of the International
Telecommunication Union (ITU) Council opened with a High-Level Segment on
emerging trends in the information and communication technologies (ICT) sector,
including climate change and cybersecurity.
14 November 2008: In a video message to the Second Annual
Sustainability Summit, organized by the Los Angeles Business Council on 14
November 2008, in Los Angeles, California, US, UN Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon
stressed the need to be “more creative” in our efforts to change the course of
the unfolding “carbon crunch” and climate change crisis.
12 November 2008: The proposed annotated agenda for the 44th
meeting of the Clean Development Mechanism (CDM) Executive Board has been
released.
12 November 2008: In
an address to the Global Indigenous Peoples Consultation on Reducing Emissions
from Deforestation and Forest Degradation (REDD), taking place from 12-14
November 2008, in Baguio City, the Philippines, Ahmed Djoghlaf, Executive Secretary of the Convention
on Biological Diversity (CBD), highlighted the opportunity for indigenous and
local communities to contribute to the formation and implementation of possible
solutions to climate change, such as REDD schemes, to ensure that their
traditional knowledge, rights and biological diversity are protected and
enhanced in the process.
November 2008: The Second Session of the UN Economic
Commission for Europe (UNECE) Ad Hoc Group of Experts on Cleaner Electricity
Production from Coal and Other Fossil Fuels will be held on 17-18 November
2008, in Geneva, Switzerland. The meeting is taking place in the framework of
the growing world demand for electricity and the push for more environmentally
sustainable power generation, which are projected to require massive
investments in the coming years.
12 November 2008: The UN World Tourism Organization (UNWTO),
in partnership with the World Travel Market, held a Ministers' Summit at the
World Travel Market in London, UK, on 11 November 2008, under the theme
“Responding to the Economic Downturn and Staying on Course with the Climate and
Poverty Reduction Agenda.” During the meeting, a new UNWTO Resilience Committee
was announced.
11 November 2008: In a joint op-ed piece published in The International Herald Tribune on 10 November 2008 with Indonesian President
Susilo Bambang Yudhoyono, Polish Prime Minister Donald Tusk and Danish Prime
Minister Anders Fogh Rasmussen, UN Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon called for the
summit on the global financial crisis, scheduled to be held on 15 November
2008, in Washington DC, US, to seize the opportunity to tackle global warming.
November 2008: California Governor Arnold Schwarzenegger and other US governors are co-hosting the Governors' Global Climate Summit, which will convene in Los Angeles, California, US, from 18-19 November 2008. In addition to government and sub-national “climate leaders” from, inter alia, China, India, the US, Brazil, Mexico and Canada, participants will include representatives from non-governmental organizations, academia and the private sector.
11 November 2008: In his monthly press conference, UN Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon indicated that the global financial crisis continues to be a priority, and noted that it presents an opportunity to address climate change
since “green growth can create millions of jobs” at a time of economic hardship.
