Event: Joint Session of the UNECE Timber Committee and the FAO European Forestry Commission [viewed]
The Action Plan on the Role of the Forest Sector in a Green Economy is intended to provide policymakers with ideas for ways and means of improving and promoting the forest sector's contribution to a green economy. It could be presented to UNCSD as a practical contribution to greener economies in the ECE region.
12 January 2011: The World Bank has announced that Tranche 2 of its Umbrella Carbon Facility (UCF) is now operational with initial funding of €68 million. This Tranche provides the opportunity for existing carbon projects to continue selling their carbon credits well beyond 2012.
12 January 2011: Speaking at a ceremony at UN Headquarters in New York, US, marking the handover from Yemen to Argentina of the chairmanship of the Group of 77 and China (G77/China), UN Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon underscored that important trends "continue to shape our shared efforts to combat poverty and ensure prosperity for all."
12 January 2011: The European Environment Agency (EEA) has released a report titled "Mapping the impacts of natural hazards and technological accidents in Europe," which analyzes impacts of three types of hazards: hydrometeorological or weather related, such as storms, extreme temperature events, forest fires, droughts and floods; geophysical, including snow avalanches, landslides, earthquakes and volcanoes; and technological, such as oil spills, industrial accidents and toxic spills from mining activities.
December 2010: The Asian Development Bank (ADB) has published a report featuring its efforts to promote integrated solutions to address climate change threats in Asia and the Pacific.
This workshop will discuss: training policy makers and managers in flood and drought management; assessing the capacity of existing water education institutes and training of flood forecasting specialists; training water department technicians and managers and updating curricula; and providing education in schools and communities in managing geo-hazards. The workshop is part of a the UN Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization's (UNESCO) partnership with Pakistan to help the country develop and manage its responses to flood and drought, and to measure potential impacts of land-use, population, climate change and other factors on water resources.
12 January 2011: In a statement delivered at the Masdar Institute of Science and Technology (MI) in Abu Dhabi, United Arab Emirates (UAE), Hillary Clinton, US Secretary of State, commended the goals of the International Renewable Agency (IRENA) towards accelerating the rapid development and deployment of renewable energy worldwide.
