29 January 2009: The World Meteorological Organization (WMO) has released its latest Bulletin, which focuses on World Meteorological Day, to be celebrated on 23 March and focused on the theme: “Weather, climate and the air we breathe.”
28 January 2009: A joint annual meeting of Global Earth Observation and Monitoring (GEOmon) and Infrastructure for Measurements of the European Carbon Cycle (IMECC) was hosted by the World Meteorological Organization (WMO) in Geneva, Switzerland, from 26-30 January 2009.
27 January 2009: The 30th session of the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC) will take place on 21-23 April 2009, in Antalya, Turkey. The meeting will focus on the future of the IPCC, in particular the scoping of the Fifth Assessment Report. The Panel will also consider the outcome of the Scoping Meeting for a possible Special Report on “Extreme events and disasters: managing the risks,” which is to be held on 23-26 March 2009, in Oslo, Norway.
29 January 2009: In a statement delivered at the 14th Ordinary Session of the Executive Council of the African Union, taking place in Addis Ababa, Ethiopia, Abdoulie Janneh, UN Under-Secretary-General and Executive Secretary of the Economic Commission for Africa (ECA), noted that although Africa' s economic performance is commendable, it is not sufficient to achieve the Millennium Development Goals and the continent now faces the pressing challenges of global financial crisis, climate change and the maintenance of peace and security. He stressed that the continent will bear most of the burden of climate change, and called for mainstreaming mitigation, adaptation, financing and technology issues into the African policy agenda.
January 2009: The International Energy Agency (IEA), the International Organization for Standardization, and the International Electrotechnical Commission are organizing a workshop on International Standards to Promote Energy Efficiency and Reduce Carbon Emissions. The workshop will convene at the Organization for Economic and Co-operation Development (OECD) conference centre in Paris, France, from 16-17 March 2009.
January 2009: The International Union for Conservation of Nature (IUCN) has published two reports on sustainable bioenergy production and on linkages between energy, ecosystems and livelihoods.
29 January 2009: In two events delivered at the World Economic Forum taking place in Davos, Switzerland, Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon underlined that within the current multiple crises, climate change is the “only one truly existential threat” and called on the world's leaders to use the current economic crisis to launch a new Global Compact entailing a “Green New Deal.”
29 January 2009: Commenting on the message on climate change “Shaping an Opportunity Out of Crisis” issued to the participants at the World Economic Forum taking place in Davos, Switzerland, the UN Development Programme (UNDP) welcomed the emphasis placed on addressing climate change at this year's edition of the event.
29 January 2009: The North Atlantic Treaty Organization (NATO) Secretary General Jaap de Hoop Scheffer addressed a Seminar on Security Prospects in the High North, underscoring that the Arctic ice cap melting causes changes that will affect the whole international community, and suggested that NATO could contribute to addressing this problem through its participation in relief operations and utilizing the opportunities inherent to the NATO-Russia Council.
29 January 2009: The Secretariat of the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC) has prepared a draft report of the Panel's 29th session, which took place from 31 August to 4 September 2008, in Geneva, Switzerland.
