5 February 2009: Addressing a breakfast meeting of Chief Executive Officers, which took place ahead of the opening of the 2009 Delhi Sustainable Development Summit, in New Delhi, India, UN Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon invited business community leaders to become “leaders to become pioneers in leading on climate change issues.”
4 February 2009: The “Good Jobs, Green Jobs National Conference: Making a Down Payment on the Green Economy” convened in Washington, DC, US, from 4-6 February 2009. Speaking at the conference, Achim Steiner, Executive Director of the UN Environment Programme (UNEP), highlighted the economic and employment implications of climate change, drew attention to the related initiatives launched by UNEP in 2008 (the Global Green New Deal and Green Economy initiatives), and called on the US to “champion the international cause of the Green Economy and of a transition to a low-carbon society.”
4 February 2009: The UN Commission for Social Development is holding its 47th session from 4-13 February 2009, at UN Headquarters in New York, US.
February 2009: The UNFCCC Secretariat has reported that, following consultations with the Chair of the Ad Hoc Working Group on Further Commitments for Annex I Parties under the Kyoto Protocol (AWG-KP), Harald Dovland (Norway), and the Chair of the Ad Hoc Working Group on Long-term Cooperative Action under the Convention (AWG-LCA), Michael Zammit Cutajar (Malta), and taking into account guidance provided by the Subsidiary Body for Implementation, the ninth session of the AWG-KP and the seventh session of the AWG-LCA will take place at the UN Conference Centre of the UN Economic and Social Commission for Asia and the Pacific in Bangkok, Thailand, from 28 September-9 October 2009.
4 February 2009: Speaking at the fourth World Congress on Conservation Agriculture (CA), held from 4-7 February 2009, in New Delhi, India, Shivaji Pandey, Director of the UN Food and Agriculture Organization's (FAO) Plant Production and Protection Division, called on the world's farmers to adopt CA practices to ensure sustainable yield growth and reduce agriculture's carbon footprint.
3 February 2009: The International Energy Agency (IEA) hosted an experts meeting on carbon capture and storage (CCS) from 2-3 February 2009, in Paris, France. The event brought together over 50 CCS regulatory, finance, insurance and public awareness experts to develop an international CCS Roadmap that describes targets and timetables for rapid CCS demonstration and deployment.
3 February 2009: Carlos Lopes, UN Institute for Training and Research (UNITAR) Executive Director, and Henri Proglio, VEOLIA Environnment Chief Executive Officer and Chairman, have renewed the cooperation contract between UNITAR's Local Development Programme and VEOLIA Environnment.
February 2009: The UN Statistical Commission will hold its 40th session from 24-27 February 2009, in New York, US. During the meeting, the Commission will discuss a report prepared by the Australian Bureau of Statistics titled “Report of the programme reviewer on climate change and official statistics” (E/CN.3/2009/2), containing a programme review of climate change related statistics.
31 January 2009: The UN International Strategy for Disaster Reduction (ISDR) has released the January 2009 issue of its newsletter, ISDR-Highlights.
30 January 2009: The Trust Fund Committees for the World Bank's Climate Investment Funds met on 27-30 January 2009, and identified which countries will be offered funding under the PPCR within the US$6 billion Climate Investment Funds. Bangladesh, Bolivia, Cambodia, Mozambique, Nepal, Niger, Tajikistan and Zambia have been invited to submit projects to the World Bank's Pilot Program for Climate Resilience (PPCR), which will provide about US$500 million for scaled up action and transformational change in integrating climate resilience in national development planning.
