CBD, IPCC Invite Contributions for AR5 on Biodiversity and Climate Change [viewed]

16 March 2011: The Secretariats of the Convention on Biological Diversity (CBD) and the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC) have issued a joint notification inviting CBD National Focal Points and focal points for the CBD's Subsidiary Body on Scientific, Technical and Technological Advice (SBSTTA) to contribute to and review chapters of its Fifth Assessment Report (AR5) related to biodiversity and climate change, to be completed in 2014.

Event: Second Clean Energy Ministerial [viewed]

The Second Clean Energy Ministerial is an initiative of the Major Economies Forum (MEF), which was established in early 2009 to facilitate a positive outcome of climate change negotiations at the UN Climate Change Conference in Copenhagen. Ministers of the MEF will discuss initiatives that were developed as a result of the first Clean Energy Ministerial, which met in July 2010 in Washington, DC, US. These initiatives sought to eliminate the need to build more than 500 mid-sized power plants, begin smart grid deployment, deploy 20 million electric vehicles by 2020 and bring solar lanterns or other improved energy services to more than 10 million people without access to grid electricity by 2015. Governments participating in Clean Energy Ministerial initiatives include Australia, Brazil, Canada, China, Denmark, the European Commission, Finland, France, Germany, India, Indonesia, Italy, Japan, Republic of Korea, Mexico, Norway, the Russian Federation, South Africa, Spain, Sweden, the United Arab Emirates, the UK, and the United States.

Adaptation Fund Board Approves Projects in Solomon Islands, Eritrea and Ecuador [viewed]

18 March 2011: The Adaptation Fund Board has approved funding for projects in Eritrea, Ecuador and the Solomon Islands totaling US$19.5 million. The decisions were taken during the Board's 13th meeting, in Bonn, Germany, on 17-18 March 2011. The Board also approved a project concept from Uruguay that uses the Adaptation Fund's direct access modality for countries to access financing directly.

SPREP Convenes Pacific Climate Change Roundtable [viewed]

18 March 2011: The Secretariat of the Pacific Regional Environment Programme (SPREP) convened the Pacific Climate Change Roundtable (PCCR) from 14-18 March in Alofi, Niue. Delegates discussed the establishment of a Pacific climate change fund that would be coordinated at the regional level but operated at the national level.
