Event: Summit of the Tropical Forest Basins of the World [viewed]

The objective of the Summit of Heads of State and Government of the Amazon, Congo, and Borneo-Mekong Forest Basins is to achieve a plan for sustainable management of forest ecosystems and to contribute to climate regulation by: establishing baseline data on the forest resources of the three Basins; establishing a formal platform for mutual consultation and exchange on forest and environmental issues by signing a framework agreement between the Basins; and developing a shared position on REDD+ (reducing emissions from deforestation and forest degradation in developing countries, as well as conservation, sustainable management of forests and enhancement of carbon stocks) and the climate change agreement before the 17th meeting of the Conference of the Parties (COP 17) to the UN Framework Convention on Climate Change (UNFCCC). More than 35 nations are expected to participate. The meeting is also part of celebrations of the International Year of Forests (2011), and its discussions and outcomes will feed into preparations for the UN Conference on Sustainable Development (UNCSD, or Rio+20).

This International Energy Agency (IEA) workshop aims to investigate how key stakeholders in finance, policy and industry can work together to deliver contributions expected from renewables to energy security and climate change mitigation. This workshop will bring together decision makers from these sectors to discuss, among others: how adaptation and energy security are related; short-term market prospects; policy appropriateness from the perspectives of the regulated; and industry's ability to scale up needed technologies.

Event: Quantifying and Managing Land Use Impacts of Bioenergy [viewed]

Jointly organized by IEA Bioenergy and the Brazilian Bioethanol Science and Technology Laboratory (CBTE), this workshop aims discuss land use change impacts of bioenergy production, and provide strategies to mitigate them. Specifically, it will look at methods for quantifying direct and indirect land use change, recognizing further land use impacts of bioenergy such as in greenhouse gas accounting and renewables programs, and finally how to minimize the lands use impacts of bioenergy. Expressions of interest in participation should be sent by 15 March 2011. The deadline for submission of paper abstracts is 30 May 2011.

Compliance Committee Decides on Bulgaria's Eligiblity to Participate in Kyoto Mechanisms [viewed]

14 February 2011: The Enforcement Branch of the Kyoto Protocol Compliance Committee has decided that Bulgaria is now fully eligible to participate in the Kyoto Protocol mechanisms under Kyoto Protocol Articles 6 (Joint Implementation (JI)), 12 (Clean Development Mechanism (CDM)) and 17 (Emissions Trading).
