February 2009: The UN Economic Commission for Europe (UNECE) is organizing a workshop on energy efficiency in housing, from 21-22 April 2009, in Sofia, Bulgaria. The workshop will bring together representatives from governments, the private sector and academia to provide UNECE member States with policy guidance and suggestions on how to increase energy efficiency in the housing sector.
February 2009: The African Monsoon Multidisciplinary Analyses (AMMA) will hold its third International Conference from 20-24 July 2009, in Ouagadougou, Burkina Faso. AMMA is endorsed by the World Climate Research Programme and International Geosphere-Biosphere Programme, both co-sponsored by the World Meteorological Organization.
20 February 2009: The UN Environment Programme (UNEP) has released a report titled “From Conflict to Peacebuilding - The Role of Natural Resources and the Environment.”
20 February 2009: The International Telecommunication Union (ITU) organized the Pacific ICT Ministerial Forum, titled “Connecting the Unconnected,” which convened in Nukualofa, Tonga, from 17-20 February 2009.
20 February 2009: Ján Kubiš, Executive Secretary of the UN Economic Commission for Europe (UNECE), presented the Arabic, Chinese, Russian and Spanish versions of the coloring book “Daddy you can save the planet!”
18 February 2009: In preparation for the seventh session of the Ad Hoc Working Group on Further Commitments for Annex I Parties under the Kyoto Protocol (AWG-KP7), scheduled to take place from 29 March-8 April 2009, in Bonn, Germany, the UNFCCC Secretariat has released the provisional agenda and annotations for the meeting (FCCC/KP/AWG/2009/1).
February 2009: The European Commission (EC) is funding the Transatlantic Dialogue on Climate Change and Security, which will be launched on 25 February 2009, by the International Institute for Strategic Studies (IISS) in Washington DC, US.
19 February 2009: The City of Copenhagen, which will host the UN Climate Change Conference later this year, became the 100th participant in the Climate Neutral Network (CN Net). CN Net is an initiative of the UN Environment Programme (UNEP) that promotes low-carbon economies and involves cities, companies, non-governmental organizations, countries and UN agencies. Other additions to CN Net include Microsoft, Daejeon, South Korea, the Norwegian County of Aust-Agder, Deutsche Bank and News Limited.
19 February 2009: The UN Conference on Trade and Development (UNCTAD) organized a meeting entitled “Maritime Transport and the Climate Change Challenge,” from 16-18 February 2009, in Geneva, Switzerland. Experts attending the gathering underlined that, although seaborne vessels' engines currently contribute between 1.6% and 4.1% of global carbon dioxide emissions, these may triple by 2050, and called for steps to limit the climate-change impact of maritime transport.
18 February 2009: The Kyoto Protocol's joint implementation (JI) mechanism has accredited its first third party verifier, TÜV SÜD Industrie Service GmbH, which will determine the acceptability of emission reduction projects and verify emission reductions achieved.
