23 March 2009: The UN Economic and Social Commission for Asia and the Pacific (ESCAP) will launch the 2009 edition of the Economic and Social Survey of Asia and the Pacific, on 26 March 2009, in 20 cities across the region as well as New York, US, and Geneva, Switzerland. The Survey examines the impact of the convergence of three global crises – the economic downturn, food and fuel price volatility and climate change – on Asia and the Pacific, and how the region can tackle them.

18 March 2009: Thirty countries met in Paris, France, to discuss the fifth replenishment of the Global Environment Facility (GEF-5), with several calling for a substantial increase in the replenishment of the GEF. The First Meeting of Contributing Participants towards GEF-5 gathered prospective donors from developed and developing countries from 17-18 March 2009, to consider, inter alia, innovative sources of funding, including the possibility of obtaining carbon credits for GEF projects that mitigate greenhouse gas emissions.

17 March 2009: The UN Development Programme (UNDP) has commended the announcement by President Mohamed Nasheed of the Maldives regarding his country's intention to become the world's first carbon neutral country within the next decade. President Nasheed noted that the commitment would be met through the implementation of an eco-plan to become carbon neutral, shifting from fossil fuels to renewable energy.

March 2009: The Scientific and Technical Review Panel (STRP) of the Ramsar Convention on Wetlands will hold its 15th meeting from 30 March-3 April 2009, in Gland, Switzerland. March 2009: The International Food Policy Research Institute (IFPRI) has released a new policy brief that discusses the role of formal and informal knowledge systems for sustainable agricultural development in the light of emerging challenges such as high food prices, adaptation to climate change and growing demand for biofuels.
