7 October 2009: The President of the International Fund for Agricultural Development (IFAD), Kanayo Nwanze, attended the IMF/World Bank annual meeting held from 6-7 October 2009, in Istanbul, Turkey, to underscore the pivotal role of smallholder agriculture in addressing climate change, food security and poverty.
2 October 2009: The Governors' Global Climate Summit 2, held from 30 September-2 October 2009, in Los Angeles, US, produced a declaration in which leaders present at the meeting committed to work together to pursue clean transportation and mobility, support national climate change legislation, and include forests in climate policy development.
The tenth session of the Conference of the Parties (COP 10) to the UN Convention to Combat Desertification (UNCCD) is scheduled to convene from 10-21 October 2011 in Changwon City, Gyeongnam Province, Republic of Korea.
The ninth session of the Committee for the Review of the Implementation of the Convention (CRIC 9) and the second special session of the Committee on Science and Technology (CST S-2) of the UN Convention to Combat Desertification (UNCCD) are expected to take place from 16-25 February 2011. CST S-2 will convene from 16-18 February, and will be followed by CRIC 9 from 21-25 February. In addition, the COP 9 Bureau will meet from 14-15 February, and regional consultations preparatory to CRIC 9 will convene back-to-back with the CST session.
6 October 2009: The UN Environment Programme (UNEP), in collaboration with the UN Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO) and the UN Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization (UNESCO), has compiled a report that illustrates how the ocean's carbon capture and storage systems (CCS) are being undermined by human activity, thereby harming their ability to “sequester” greenhouse gas emissions.
6 October 2009: The first African reforestation project to be registered under the Clean Development Mechanism (CDM) is being undertaken by Uganda's National Forestry Authority, in association with local community organizations.
6 October 2009: At the behest of climate negotiators and policy makers involved in the UNFCCC negotiations leading up to the Copenhagen Climate Change Conference in December 2009, the International Energy Agency (IEA) has published an excerpt from its annual World Energy Outlook (WEO) in advance this year, to ensure that negotiators are equipped with up-to-date knowledge about the global energy sector.
6 October 2009: Leaders of the European Union (EU) and Brazil agreed to step up efforts towards the inclusion of reducing emissions from deforestation and forest degradation (REDD) in the outcome to be reached in Copenhagen and to establish an “effective and reliable means of support for REDD” under the climate change Convention.
6 October 2009: A legally binding instrument on pollutant release and transfer registers will enter into force on 8 October 2009, and help identify, among others, emitters of certain greenhouse gases across Europe.
5 October 2009: Yvo de Boer, Executive Secretary of the UNFCCC, addressed the World Bank Bali Dialogue in Istanbul, Turkey, on 5 October.
