UNESCAP31 March 2016: Delegates at a UN regional dialogue on Financing for Development (FfD) agreed on follow-up steps towards implementing the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development, including plans to nurture capital markets and establish a regional forum on tax cooperation in the Asia-Pacific region. At the meeting, the Green Climate Fund (GCF) urged countries to submit innovative project proposals on responding to climate challenges, for possible financing.

Event: Signature Ceremony of the Paris Climate Agreement: High-Level Luncheon [viewed]

On the occasion of the signing ceremony of the Paris Agreement on climate change, UN Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon will host a high-level luncheon bringing together governments, business, investors, civil society and the UN to signal support for translating the agreement into action. It will focus on the scale and pace of the market transformation required to achieve a safer, healthier and more prosperous future. The luncheon is being organized with support from the UN Global Compact, and is open to UN Global Compact company representatives at the chief executive level.

Event: Oceans and Climate Meeting in Preparation for Oceans Day at UNFCCC COP 22 [viewed]

This is the third in a series of initial discussion meetings on oceans and climate change, which aim to: prioritize actions to be undertaken during the next 12 months to advance specific aspects of the oceans and climate agenda; help mobilize a group of high-level leaders on oceans and climate to provide the necessary political impetus and support; consider which collaborating organizations have the comparative advantage and willingness to take the lead on specific priority actions; and initiate work with the Government of Morocco and others to ensure oceans issues are prominent at the 22nd session of the Conference of the Parties (COP 22) to the UNFCCC, in particular, through the convening of Oceans Day. Priority actions will draw from recommendations on oceans and climate related to mitigation, adaptation, displacement, financing, and capacity development, laid out at Oceans Day during UNFCCC COP 21.

March 2016 Climate Finance Update: Fund Boards Meet, Carbon Markets Under the Spotlight [viewed]

march2016_climate_finance7 April 2016: In the Paris Agreement, agreed upon by 195 UN Member States in December 2015, countries agreed to make “finance flows consistent with a pathway towards low greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions and climate-resilient development.” Developing countries will receive financial resources for both mitigation and adaptation actions, while developed countries are expected to continue to lead in mobilizing climate finance from a variety of sources, with public funds playing a significant role in reaching the previously agreed US$100 billion annual target by 2020. Monthly IIDS RS Climate Finance Updates aim to help track multilateral financing to support the finance goal agreed under the UNFCCC, which will in turn contribute to the implementation of Sustainable Development Goal (SDG) 13 (Take urgent action to combat climate change and its impacts).

LAC Environment Ministers Agree to Cooperate on Climate Change, SDGs, Chemicals [viewed]

UNEP31 March 2016: At a regional forum held in preparation for the Second UN Environment Assembly (UNEA-2), environment ministers from Latin American and Caribbean countries agreed on arrangements for cooperation on climate, air quality, and chemicals and waste. Sustainable Energy Finance Update: Majority of 2015 Renewables Investment Went to Developing Countries [viewed]

In a separate Goal, SDG 17, they set out targets for the means of implementation (MOI) necessary for achieving the SDGs. As the focus shifts from "the year of decisions" to "the year of implementation," the MOI necessary for achieving SDG 7, as well as the other Goals, are receiving greater attention.
