FAO29 May 2014: The Food and Agriculture Organization of the UN (FAO) has issued a brief, titled ‘Agriculture at the UN Climate Change Talks,' in advance of the Bonn Climate Change Conference taking place from 4-15 June in Bonn, Germany. The brief, which is targeted at an audience with a particular interest in agriculture and land-use issues, highlights the meeting context, key issues for agriculture and land use and areas where agriculture will be directly and indirectly addressed during the discussions, including both negotiations and side events.

FS-UNEP Collaborating Centre Report Describes Transformation of Existing Fund into NCFI in Benin [viewed]

The report describes the transformation of an existing entity, FNE, an institution originally designed to mobilize international and national funding sources for national environmental projects, into a national climate finance institution (NCFI), the National Fund for the Environment and Climate (FNEC), which addresses climate change adaptation and mitigation as well as environment and development efforts.

Event: Second Integrated Research on Disaster Risk Conference [viewed]

The Second Integrated Research on Disaster Risk Conference will take place under the theme ‘Integrated Disaster Risk Science: A Tool for Sustainability,' with an emphasis on science as a tool to address hazard risks and sustainable development. Plenaries and break-out sessions will discuss challenges in implementing integrated disaster risk research as well as inter-organisational collaboration and policy issues, using examples from global and local contexts. Plenary sessions will focus on: the role of science in the 2015 agenda; water; science and the media; and resiliency and reconstruction. More than ten breakout sessions will take place, including ones on: community disaster reduction; empowering local officials; and indigenous and vulnerable populations. A special session will address earth observations for disaster risk reduction in developing countries. The Integrated Research on Disaster Risk (IRDR) programme and the Chinese Academy of Sciences are organizing the conference in collaboration with a number of partners, including the UN Office for Disaster Risk Reduction (UNISDR).

Event: G7 Summit [viewed]

The leaders of Canada, France, Germany, Italy, Japan, the United Kingdom (UK), the US, the President of the European Council and the President of the European Commission (EC) will convene for a G7 Summit from the evening of 4 June through the morning of 5 June 2014. Leaders are expected to discuss: the situation in Ukraine and relations with the Russian Federation; climate change and development; energy security; the global economy; trade; and other foreign policy topics. The 40th meeting of the G8 summit was scheduled to be held in the Russian Federation in June 2014. At their meeting in The Hague, the Netherlands in March 2014, the G7 leaders decided to hold a meeting without the Russian Federation, due to the Crimean crisis.
