Event: 2016 International Conference on Sustainable Development [viewed]

The fourth annual International Conference on Sustainable Development (ICSD), on the theme ‘Moving Forward: The SDGs in Practice,' will bring together members of the research, policy, practice and business communities to share practical solutions for achieving the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) at local and national levels. The Conference will focus on four thematic areas: Innovation in Technology and Governance; Data (data systems, gaps, how to collect); The Science-Policy-Implementation Interface; and Education and Training. The main topics for discussion will be: Low Carbon Urban Development; Socially Inclusive Economic Growth; Agriculture, Food Security and Nutrition; and Disaster Resiliency and Adaptation. Event: 2016 UNEP FI Global Roundtable and Annual General Meeting [viewed]

The 2016 UN Environment Programme Finance Initiative (UNEP FI) Global Roundtable and Annual General Meeting will be hosted by the Ministry of Climate Change and Environment of the United Arab Emirates (UAE), with support from the UAE Central Bank. The events will bring together finance stakeholders from various sectors, including government, civil society and the UN, to discuss the role of the global financial sector in addressing the sustainable development and climate change agendas. Topics to be addressed during the two-day Global Roundtable, linked to select sustainable development goals (SDGs), include: climate change mitigation and decarbonizing finance (SDG 13); resilient and sustainable cities and communities (SDG 11); clean energy and water (SDGs 6 and 7); and financing small and medium-sized enterprises (SDG 8). Plenary sessions are planned on: green islamic finance; policy and regulatory frameworks for a sustainable financial system; and sustainable finance innovations.

Event: Global Green Growth Week 2016 [viewed]

Global Green Growth Week 2016 (GGGW2016), which will meet under the theme 'Maximizing Impact for Inclusive and Sustainable Green Growth,' will provide a platform to generate innovative solutions, leverage green growth opportunities and promote the delivery of pro-poor, inclusive, and environmentally sustainable growth. The event, which is being organized by the Global Green Growth Institute (GGGI), will address four thematic priorities for inclusive, sustainable green growth: energy, water, land use and green cities. The event will bring together representatives from government, multilateral development banks (MDBs), international development agencies, the private sector, academia and non-governmental organizations. Participants will look at green growth policy, research, partnerships, financing and technology through policy dialogues, panel discussions, capacity-building workshops, country-focused briefings and technology exhibits. GGGW2016 will include: the Global Green Growth Summit, which will address the challenges of developing bankable projects and innovative green finance; the 4th Annual Conference of the Green Growth Knowledge Platform, which will highlight the latest research and policy considerations affecting pro-poor inclusive growth; the Asian Regional Policy Dialogue, during which ministers will discuss policy options that address the challenge of transitioning away from coal use and toward green growth powered by renewable energy; the Inclusive Green Growth Partnership, which will strengthen cooperation to increase green investment in developing countries; the launch of the GGGI-New Climate Economy (NCE) Africa Initiative and the regional launch of the 2016 NCE report, which will support African policymakers navigate the development-climate change nexus; the Green Growth Fair and Technology Exhibit; country focus sessions showcasing more than 30 GGGI projects; the 9th session of the GGGI Council and the 5th session of the GGGI Assembly; and site visits to showcase Jeju Island's renewable energy and green growth projects.

IEA Confirms Decoupling of CO2 Emissions, Economic Growth in 2015 [viewed]

IEA16 March 2016: For the second year in a row, global energy-related carbon dioxide (CO2) emissions registered no growth, according to the International Energy Agency (IEA), while global gross domestic product (GDP) continued to grow. Releasing preliminary data for 2015, the IEA reported that CO2 emissions amounted to 32.1 billion tonnes in 2015 and have remained flat since 2013. The IEA pointed to a surge in renewables as a key factor, noting they accounted for 90% of new electricity generation in 2015.

Report Highlights Climate Change Impacts on Arctic Freshwater System [viewed]

East Africa Legislative Assembly Passes Watershed Disaster Risk Bill [viewed]

east_african14 March 2015: The East African Legislative Assembly (EALA) has passed the 'Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Bill 2013' in an effort to curb the impact of natural and manmade hazards in the region. The bill, the first such regional legislation in Africa, aims to enhance the coordination of disaster preparedness, management, protection and mitigation measures. The adoption of the bill marks a significant step in Africa's implementation of the Sendai Framework for Disaster Risk Reduction (DRR) 2015-2030, which was adopted in March 2015.

The reports compile information relevant to the implementation of the framework for capacity building in developing countries adopted in the Marrakesh Accords (decision 2/CP.7) and the Durban Forum, established by decision 2/CP.17 as a space for in-depth discussion on capacity building.

Asian Events Address Urban Resilience, Climate Change Adaptation [viewed]

The Association of Southeast Asian Nations (ASEAN) Forum on Improvement of Knowledge, Skills and Competence of Stakeholders in Climate Change Adaptation garnered experiences from ASEAN countries on how education and university curricula treat climate change in order to create knowledge and competencies for climate change-resilient agriculture and food security. The second Asia-Pacific Forum on Urban Resilience and Adaptation – Resilient Cities Asia-Pacific 2016 brought together local governments, institutions and communities to discuss climate resilience in urban areas, including SDG 11.

CSW 60 Opens with Calls for Gender Equality to Guide Action on SDGs [viewed]

csw6014 March 2016: The 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development provides a framework for action to transform gender relations and achieve gender equality and women's empowerment, making the world a better place for all, UN leaders said at the opening session of the 60th Session of the Commission on the Status of Women (CSW). CSW 60 is expected to discuss implementation of the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) and take stock of progress in eliminating violence against women and girls.
