UNESCAP15 December 2014: During an event that convened ten years after one of the deadliest natural disasters the world has ever seen, panelists took stock of progress made in building greater resilience to disasters in the Asia-Pacific region, and identified remaining gaps and regional priorities going forward. The event highlighted that, while much has been done to fill the gaps in risk reduction, disaster preparedness and early warning systems ten years on from the Indian Ocean Tsunami, which hit on 26 December 2004, much remains to be done, particularly at the local level.

UNEP FI Report Reviews How Public Interventions Can Unlock Private Climate Finance [viewed]

Unepfin5 December 2014: The UN Environment Programme's (UNEP) Finance Initiative has published a report, titled ‘Demystifying Private Climate Finance,' which discusses the concept of private finance, how it links with climate change mitigation and adaptation, and how public actors can mobilize it. The report aims to increase policymakers' understanding of private finance and introduce an approach that climate policy makers can follow when designing public interventions for unlocking private climate finance.

Event: CODATU XVI Conference [viewed]

This meeting will focus on ‘Energy, Climate and Air Quality Challenges: The Role of Urban Transport Policies in Developing Countries and Emerging Economies'. The conference will include plenary sessions on, inter alia; mitigation actions taken by cities; urban transport and climate change; financing for and optimizing benefits from low-carbon transport; and commitments and initiatives on the way to COP 21 of the UNFCCC in Paris, France. The conference is being organized by Cooperation for Urban Mobility in the Developing World (CODATU). Participants will also learn about, through field visits, Istanbul's public transport system, the Istanbul metro and a bike sharing programme.

WMO: 2014 on Track to be Europe's Warmest Year on Record [viewed]

Wmo17 December 2014: The World Meteorological Organization (WMO) has reported that analysis of European temperature data from January through November 2014 confirms that 2014 will almost certainly be Europe's warmest year on record. A new analysis of European temperature records dating back to the 1500s estimates the January-December annual mean temperature to be .3°C above the previous record set in 2007.

FAO Reports on Mesoamerican LULUCF Workshop [viewed]

FAO16 December 2014: The Mesoamerican Workshop on National Emissions Inventories and Mitigation Plans in Agriculture, Land Use, Land-Use Change and Forestry (LULUCF) assisted 15 countries in identifying resources and methods in order to improve their reporting under the UNFCCC, according to the workshop's final report, released by the Food and Agriculture Organization of the UN (FAO). The report also relays the major challenges these countries face in both implementing and reporting on measures to address climate change.
