6 February 2009: A series of events marking the end of the International Polar Year (IPY) will take place on 24-25 February 2009, in Geneva, Switzerland. The IPY is a large scientific programme organized through the International Council for Science and the World Meteorological Organization (WMO) and focused on the Arctic and the Antarctic, from March 2007 to March 2009.

UNFCCC Secretariat Releases Party Submissions [viewed]

6 February 2009: The UNFCCC Secretariat has released submissions by the Republic of Korea, detailing the proposals to: establish a Registry of Nationally Appropriate Mitigation Actions (NAMAs) of developing countries at the UNFCCC Secretariat as part of the agreed outcome to be adopted at COP 15 in Copenhagen in December 2009; and recognize carbon credit for the verifiable mitigation arising from certain NAMAs as is agreed and contained in paragraph 1(b)(ii) of the Bali Action Plan.

5 February 2009: After a meeting held on 5 February 2009, in Berlin, Germany,  German Chancellor Angela Merkel and the Heads of the Organisation for Economic Co-operation and Development (OECD), the World Trade Organization (WTO), the International Labour Organization (ILO), the International Monetary Fund (IMF) and the World Bank issued a joint statement on the global economic situation, in which they stress the need for the worldwide fight against climate change to remain “a top priority.”

IDB Funds Energy Efficiency in the Caribbean [viewed]

28 January 2009: The Inter-American Development Bank (IDB) recently approved three projects to support energy efficiency in the Caribbean. The Bahamas will receive US$1.45 million to strengthen the capacity of the Ministry of the Environment and support ongoing efforts to reform the country's regulatory, financial and fiscal frameworks, in order to achieve a sustainable energy matrix and to encourage energy efficiency in public, commercial and residential buildings.

UNCCD Announces Conference to Discuss Monitoring and Assessment of Desertification and Land Degradation [viewed]

6 February 2009: The UN Convention to Combat Desertification (UNCCD) has released information concerning the scientific conference to be held in conjunction with the next meeting of its Committee on Science and Technology. The conference will consider “Bio-physical and socio-economic monitoring and assessment of desertification and land degradation, to support decision-making in land and water management.”
