13 March 2009: The UN Industrial Development Organization (UNIDO) has signed a memorandum of understanding with a consortium of partners to provide financial and technical support for the building and operation of a fleet of 15 hydrogen-fuelled three-wheel vehicles in New Delhi, India. The agreement was reached by UNIDO's International Centre for Hydrogen Energy Technologies (ICHET), the UNIDO Regional Office for South Asia, and Indian partners, including: the Indian Institute of Technology, Delhi; Mahindra and Mahindra; and Air Products.

13 March 2009: Speaking at the tenth session of the Human Rights Council, which is taking place in Geneva, Switzerland, from 2-27 March 2009, Water Kalin, the UN Secretary-General's Special Representative on the human rights of internally displaced persons (IDPs), stated that over 26 million people are estimated to have been displaced by natural disasters and conflicts worldwide.

12 March 2009: The UNFCCC Secretariat has released a document (FCCC/KP/AWG/2009/INF. 2) on a further elaboration by the Chair of the Ad Hoc Working Group on Further Commitments for Annex I Parties under the Kyoto Protocol (AWG-KP) of possible improvements to emission trading and the project-based mechanisms, namely the clean development mechanism (CDM) and joint implementation (JI) under the Kyoto Protocol.

12 March 2009: The UNFCCC Secretariat has released submissions by parties on “Consideration of the scale of emission reductions to be achieved by Annex I Parties in aggregate, of the contribution of Annex I Parties individually or jointly, consistent with Article 4 of the Kyoto Protocol, to the scale of emission reductions to be achieved by Annex I Parties in aggregate, and of other relevant issues arising from the implementation of the work programme of the Ad Hoc Working Group on Further Commitments for Annex I Parties under the Kyoto Protocol as contained in document FCCC/KP/AWG/2008/8, paragraph 49 (c)” (FCCC/KP/AWG/2009/MISC.1).

11 March 2009: The Panel on Clean Development Mechanism (CDM) baseline and monitoring methodologies (CDM Meth Panel) has released the report and annexes of its 37th meeting, which convened from 2-6 March 2009, in Bonn, Germany. The report outlines the issues considered by the Panel, including: proposed new methodologies; requests for clarification on and revision to approved methodologies; issues of general guidance and tools; and schedule of meetings and rounds of submissions of proposed new methodologies.

UNFCCC Workshop Formulates Recommendations Regarding Climate-Related Hazards, Sectoral and National Level Planning [viewed]

16 March 2009: The Workshop on Integrating Practices, Tools and Systems for Climate Risk Assessment and Management and Disaster Risk Reduction Strategies into National Policies and Programmes convened from 10-12 March 2009, in Havana, Cuba. The workshop took place under the aegis of the Nairobi Work Programme on Impacts, Vulnerability and Adaptation to Climate Change, which was established in 2006 under the UNFCCC. The event was held in collaboration with the UN International Strategy for Disaster Reduction and brought together approximately 80 participants, representing governments, UN agencies and constituted bodies, academia, and non-governmental organizations.

13 March 2009: The UN Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization (UNESCO) held an international experts meeting on “Climate Change and Arctic Sustainable Development: scientific, social, cultural and educational challenges,” which convened from 3-6 March 2009, in Monaco. The meeting brought together experts in the social and natural sciences, ethics, education and international affairs who sought the local expertise of indigenous peoples in drafting a set of 66 recommendations for follow-up action.
