Event: UNEP Finance Initiative's e-Learning Course on Climate Change: Risks and Opportunities for the Finance Sector [viewed]

This e-Learning course, run by the UN Environment Programme (UNEP) Finance Initiative Climate Change Working Group, will leverage the e-Learning infrastructure of the UN Institute for Training and Research (UNITAR) and targets executives and middle management from financial institutions including banks, insurers, reinsurers, and fund managers, from both developed and developing regions. The course will enable senior and mid-level executives in financial institutions to learn about climate change and how it affects their industry in a flexible, cost-effective and accessible e-learning training environment with opportunities to network and interact with fellow participants and expert tutors.

UN Secretary-General Stresses Importance of Climate Issues in Finding Aral Sea Solutions [viewed]

© UN28 April 2009: In a message delivered by Miroslav Jenca, Special Representative of the Secretary-General and Head of the UN Regional Centre for Preventive Diplomacy for Central Asia, UN Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon addressed the summit of member States of the International Fund for Saving the Aral Sea, which took place in Almaty, Kazakhstan, on 28 April 2009. Noting that the Aral Sea has shrunk by 70% in recent decades, he stated that climate variability poses a further challenge in this region where water resources are particularly vulnerable.

UNFCCC Executive Secretary Addresses Informal Ministerial Meeting [viewed]

26 April 2009: Yvo de Boer, Executive Secretary of the UNFCCC, addressed an informal gathering of Ministers of Finance and Development in Washington, DC, US. On the climate change talks in Copenhagen, he said that “policy clarity will provide the necessary impetus for up-coming investments to be directed into environmentally sound technologies, rather than infrastructure that will soon be obsolete.”
