WorldFish Center Highlights Project to Examine Offset Opportunities for Mangrove Conservation

7dic_09_164 December 2009: The WorldFish Center, a member of the Consultative Group on International AgriculturalResearch (CGIAR), has released a brief that outlines a project in the Solomon Islands, funded by the Australian Government, to examine the potential for mangrove forests to be included in voluntary carbon offset markets.

The three-year project will examine: the potential for carbon offset programmes to contribute to poverty alleviation and mangrove conservation; the carbon sequestration potential of small mangrove forests; the capacity for offset payments to communities to meet basic education and health needs; and the relationship between small projects in the voluntary market and programmes under the Clean Development Mechanism (CDM). [The Project Brief]
