World Bank Releases Report on Latin American and Caribbean Responses to Climate Change

Global financial & climate crises 10 December 2008: The World Bank released a new report entitled “Low Carbon, High Growth: Latin American Responses to Climate Change.” The study argues that a shift towards low carbon activities could enhance the region's competitiveness and contribute to a faster recovery from the current economic meltdown.

It highlights Latin America's potential to lead middle income

countries in reducing emissions from deforestation, breaking the

impasse on hydropower development, improving energy efficiency, and

transforming urban transport.

The study further explores how the

region is exposed to climate change and what it can do to avoid its

effects both unilaterally and with global climate agreement incentives

to be negotiated in 2009 at the UN Climate Change Conference in

Copenhagen. [The Report]
