World Bank Approves Hydropower Loan for Viet Nam

26 April 2011: The World Bank approved a US$330 million loan for Viet Nam to support a 260 Megawatts multipurpose hydropower project that will help meet growing domestic demand for electricity, reduce carbon dioxide emissions and bring flood control and irrigation benefits to rural and poor communities in Thanh Hoa province.

Through the Trung Son Hydropower project, the World Bank will also provide technical support to Vietnam Electricity (EVN) in improving the performance of its hydropower projects in dam safety and operations, as well as in adopting international standards in social and environmental practices. Victoria Kwakwa, World Bank Country Director for Viet Nam, explained that the Trung Son project will enhance Viet Nam's energy mix and energy security. She underscored the project's contribute to climate change mitigation, noting the avoidance of an estimated one million ton of carbon dioxide emissions per year. [World Bank Press Release]
