WMO Secretary-General Elected Chair of UN-Water
25 August 2011: The Secretary-General of the World Meteorological Organization (WMO), Michel Jarraud, has been elected as the Chair of UN-Water for a two year term.
Water lies at the center of many of the challenges facing the international community, including climate change, population growth, food security and environmental degradation. Jarraud highlighted the critical role that the distribution and availability of water plays in international crises, such as the current food crisis in the Horn of Africa. The election took place during UN-Water's 15th meeting in Stockholm. UN-Water coordinates the work of 28 UN agencies on issues relating to fresh water and was established in 2003 to maximize coordination and integration across the UN. [WMO Press Release]
