Winners of CDM African Radio Contest Announced

23 September 2011: The UNFCCC Secretariat has announced the finalists for the first UNFCCC/Clean Development Mechanism (CDM) African Radio Contest. The contest was for African radio journalists to create a radio story that answers the question: “How can my community/city/country benefit from the CDM?” and aimed to help raise awareness about climate change issues and the CDM.

The nine finalists selected from entries received will have the opportunity to take part in a two-week programme of briefings and workshop sessions during the 17th session of the Conference of the Parties (COP 17) to the UNFCCC, holding from 28 November to 9 December 2011, in Durban, South Africa. The top three winners of the radio contest are: Emmanuel Okella, News Editor, Radio Simba, Uganda; David Mwanza, Journalist, Zambia National Broadcasting Corporation, Zambia; and Ugochi Anyaka, News Anchor, Aso Radio and TV, Nigeria. The contest organizers and judges also regard the contest as part of efforts to create a CDM Radio Club to facilitate dialogue between the Secretariat and African journalists, and thus help raise awareness about, and participation in, the CDM in Africa.
