© WHO7 April 2009: The World Health Organization (WHO) and international partners, including the World Meteorological Organization (WMO), celebrated World Health Day on 7 April 2009, in Beijing, China, focusing on the theme “Save lives. Make hospitals safe in emergencies.”

At the opening ceremony, Margaret Chan, Director-General, WHO, discussed the need for long-term planning, especially for those areas that will become disaster-prone, given weather-related events due to climate change. Chan also made connections between climate change and needs to ensure disaster-related health care. Michel Jerraud, Secretary-Gerneral, WMO, noted the need for early warning systems for climate hazards. [World Health Day website] [WMO press release]
