WFP and Italian Energy Company Launch Alternative Energy Partnership

7 December 2011: A €8 million partnership between the World Food Programme (WFP) and Italian energy company Enel has been launched to address climate change and food security through the use of green stoves and solar panels.

The partnership is based on Enel's support for the WFP's environmental programmes, including Safe Access to Firewood and Alternative Energy in Humanitarian Settings (SAFE), which provides high-efficiency cooking stoves and protects women against violence while they are collecting firewood. The investment from Enel will be used to continue to distribute fuel efficient stoves, building on the 140,000 stoves already distributed by WFP. The project also will create carbon emission credits for the use of fuel efficient stoves. In addition, Enel will install solar panels on UN humanitarian response sites that store emergency supplies.

In addition to distributing fuel efficient stoves and installing solar panels, the funds from Enel will also support WFP's activities in Latin America. [UN Press Release] [WFP Press Release]
