US and Japan Announce APEC Initiatives

29 March 2010: Japan and the US, as hosts of the Asia-Pacific Economic Cooperation (APEC) forum in 2010 and 2011 respectively, have announced initiatives they will undertake in their work with the APEC economies, as they seek increased cooperation in the design of a new growth paradigm for the region, to promote balanced, inclusive, environmentally sustainable and knowledge-based growth.

On 29 March 2010, US Secretary of State Clinton and Japan's Foreign Minister Okada announced their agreement to work bilaterally in, among other things: addressing climate change by exploring opportunities to help economies in the Asia-Pacific region, particularly small island economies, to be better prepared to adapt to the likely impacts of climate change; and enhancing emergency preparedness in the Asia-Pacific region, with a focus on public-private partnerships and networking among experts.
