UNWTO Highlights Role of Tourism in a Green Economy

31 March 2009: In the lead up to the 2 April 2009 G20 Summit, in London, UK, the UN World Tourism Organization (UNWTO) has stressed the potential role of tourism as an economic stimulus and in the green economy.

Hoping to increase recognition of the potential role for the sector in stimulus plans, the UNWTO highlighted tourism's importance to trade and growth in the poorest countries, as well as for jobs creation and in encouraging investment in green infrastructure. The UNWTO further underscored that, while tourism and travel generate about 5% of global carbon emissions, the sector is committed to undertake activities supporting adaptation, mitigation and new technology. The Organization is developing a Roadmap for Recovery to assist the sector in its engagement in stimulus and the green economy.
