UNITAR Develops Programme to Build Capacity on DRR
17 January 2014: To develop and adopt a post-2015 disaster risk reduction (DRR) framework to replace the Hyogo Framework for Action (HFA), the UN Office for Disaster Risk Reduction (UNISDR) is organizing a number of international consultations and two formal preparatory committees. The UN Institute for Training and Research (UNITAR) will hold technical one-day courses in conjunction with the preparatory committee sessions to strengthen the capacity of diplomats and other government officials to participate in the process.
UNITAR is also developing an online library with tutorials to complement the training courses. These tools aim to familiarize delegates with the policy and technical aspects of DRR.
Margareta Wahlström, UN Special Representative of the Secretary-General for DRR, explained UNITAR's training programme will contribute to “a level playing field” for participants involved in the process to develop and adopt a new DRR framework.
The preparatory committees will take place in July and November in Geneva, Switzerland, in preparation for the Third World Conference on DRR.
