UNISDR, World Cities Scientific Development Alliance Launch Urban Resilience Award

26 July 2012: The UN International Strategy for Disaster Reduction (UNISDR) and the World Cities Scientific Development Alliance have announced the launch of the Resilient Cities Award. The award aims to recognize excellence in land use planning, design and development activities that protect communities from the impacts of natural hazards and reduce disaster risk.

According to UNISDR, the Award will recognize excellence in the adoption and implementation of the Ten Essentials for Making Cities Resilient, a ten-point checklist designed to help local governments assess their risks and initiate plans to improve their cities' resilience. UNISDR says special consideration will be given to efforts that raise awareness of disaster risk through successful multi-stakeholder approaches, the mobilization of funding and other resources, the implementation of educational programmes and training, and efforts to protect ecosystems and natural buffers to mitigate floods, storm surges and other natural hazards. Entries close 15 September 2012. [UNISDR Press Release] [Making Cities Resilient Campaign Website]
