UN/ISDR Urges Governments to Encourage DRR in Private Sector

21 October 2011: In light of the current floods affecting eight million people across South East Asia, the UN International Strategy for Disaster Reduction (UN/ISDR) has underscored the shortcomings of disaster risk reduction (DRR).

In an effort to improve disaster proofing, UN/ISDR is urging governments to increase dialogue with the private sector to ensure factories are located in disaster-proof areas. According to UN/ISDR the private sector has a responsibility to reduce disaster risks, as climate change is predicted to increase the frequency and intensity of such events. [UN/ISDR Press Release]
