UN/ISDR Reports on Parliamentarian DRR Initiatives
29 July 2011: The UN International Strategy for Disaster Reduction (UN/ISDR) has released information indicating that Parliamentarians in Asia, Latin America and Africa are increasingly focused on disaster risk reduction (DRR).
According to UN/ISDR, members of Parliament are key drivers of change in moving DRR from political commitments to concrete action. In Asia, UN/ISDR reports that Philippine Senators hosted the national launch of the 2011 Global Assessment Report on 26 July 26. In Africa, UN/ISDR notes that Ugandan Parliamentarians are in the process of establishing a DRR Committee of Parliamentarians that has been approved and budgeted by the Government. In Latin America, UN/ISDR underscores that Parliamentarians play a key role in supporting the UN/ISDR-led “Making Cities Resilient – My City is Getting Ready” at the Iberoamerican Union of Municipalities, which will provide training to mayors from the 22 countries in the region.
