UNISDR Reports on DRR and Adaptation Writeshops

19 April 2012: The UN International Strategy for Disaster Reduction (UNISDR) has reported on the four writeshops, which were co-convened with the Stockholm Environment Institute (SEI) and conducted since 2010 in Thailand, Ghana, Costa Rica and Barbados. UNISDR underlines that they have helped increase the body of published literature on disaster risk reduction (DRR) and climate change adaptation.

According to UNISDR, over 60 PhD students, young academics and researchers have participated in the writeshops so far, with participants from Nepal and Ghana publishing in prominent journals. The writeshops bring researchers together with experts who provide them with assistance in preparing papers for peer-review process. The resulting increased body of published findings can then be cited in UNISDR's biennial Global Assessment Report (GAR) on DRR, as well as the recent Fifth Assessment Report (AR5) of the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC).

A fifth writeshop will be held from 7-11 May 2012, in Dakar, Senegal, and applications for participation are currently invited from young scholars, practitioners, policymakers and others from Africa involved in climate change and DRR. [UNISDR Press Release]
