UN/ISDR Holds Disaster Risk Management Training in Kenya
25 August 2010: The African regional office of the UN International Strategy for Disaster Reduction (UN/ISDR) in Rift Valley Province, Kenya, held a pilot train-the-trainers workshop from 25-26 August 2010, which drew participants from several African countries.
Based on the feedback from the training workshop, a toolkit on disaster risk reduction (DRR) will be developed. The toolkit will be used in the whole African region to train communities on how to use local means and resources to adapt, mitigate and cope with hazards to prevent them from turning into disasters. According to UN/ISDR, recent events in Kenya have shown that the country is increasingly predisposed to disasters, such as floods, droughts, landslides, fires and the consequences of climate change. The training programme and toolkit aim to address the fact that, in Kenya, disasters are little understood, which impedes the country's implementation of DRR programmes.
