UN/ISDR Awards Swedish City Role Model Status for Flood Protection
22 November 2011: The UN International Strategy for Disaster Reduction (UN/ISDR) has awarded the municipality of Kristianstad, Sweden, with role model status for its efforts in flood protection. A city is designated by UN/ISDR as a role model when it demonstrates good practices in building resilience and safety in at least five out of the Ten Essentials of the "Making My City Resilient" campaign.
According to the UN/ISDR, Kristianstad has shown leadership in disaster risk reduction (DRR) and is an important advocacy partner in the UN's global strategy to encourage local governments to become active participants and leaders in DRR.
The aim of the Campaign is to enlist over 1,000 local government leaders to invest more in DRR, including: improving urban planning, infrastructure and building safety; reinforcing drainage systems to reduce flood, storm and health threats; installing early warning systems; conducting public preparedness drills; and taking measures to adapt to the increasing impacts of climate change.
