UNISDR Announces Online Dialogue for Post-2015 DRR Framework
14 August 2012: The UN International Strategy for Disaster Reduction (UNISDR) has announced that it will convene an online dialogue on a post-2015 Framework for disaster risk reduction (DRR). The dialogue will take place from 27 August - 30 November 2012, and will form the first round of a series of online consultations in the lead up to the World Conference on Disaster Reduction, scheduled to take place in 2015, in Japan.
To inform the dialogue, UNISDR has released a ten-page background paper, titled “Towards a Post-2015 Framework on DRR,” which outlines the trends and progress in DRR. It also identifies ongoing and future challenges, and explains the process of national, regional and stakeholder consultations.
The paper underscores the need to fully internalize the various practical links among disaster risk management, climate change adaptation and sustainable development in disaster risk management initiatives. It further stresses that guidance exists in some areas including: risk assessments with a view to eventually arriving at a common definition of disaster and risk; integration of climate change adaptation and disaster risk management; working at national and local levels; and vulnerability of communities to the impact of hazards.
