UN/ISDR Announces Launch of SADC Platform for DRR

26 October 2011: The UN International Strategy for Disaster Reduction (UN/ISDR) has announced the launch of the Southern African Development Community (SADC) Regional Platform for Disaster Risk Reduction (DRR). The launch took place at the SADC DRR and Preparedness Planning Workshop, which was co-convened by SADC and the Government of the Seychelles, from 12-14 October 2011, in the Seychelles.

According to UN/ISDR, the SADC regional platform was launched as member countries brace for a season of severe storms and floods, which are predicted to alternate with drought and long dry spells, until March 2012. UN/ISDR also noted that the Seychelles faces unique problems, as the country's protective barrier reef is threatened by climate change.

Youcef Ait-Chellouche, Deputy Regional Coordinator for UN/ISDR Africa, stressed the importance of focusing on implementation and preventing, mitigating and transferring risks. [UN/ISDR Press Release]
