UNIFEM Releases Rapid Gender Needs Assessment of Flood Affected Communities in Pakistan

September 2010: The UN Development Fund for Women (UNIFEM) has released a report that maps out the gender-related concerns from the floods for current relief camps, identifying gaps in information and flagging issues for upcoming stages of early recovery. The report notes that, based on global evidence, people often resort to unsustainable use of natural resources in times of humanitarian crisis. It indicates that, as existing resources are washed out or depleted, pressure on the remaining resources increase such as recording harm to forest land, destroyed saplings and plantations and stocked timber as well as extraction for firewood. The report also indicates extensive damage to livestock, which not just impairs women's livelihood, but also affects sources of energy such as dung cakes and fertilizer. [The report]
