UNGA President Releases DRR Debate Summary

13 June 2012: The President of the 66th Session of the UN General Assembly (UNGA), Nassir Abdulaziz Al-Nasser, has released his summary of the Assembly's Thematic Debate on Disaster Risk Reduction (DRR), which was held in New York, US, on 12 April 2012. The debate aimed to support and advance dialogue on how best to integrate the DRR approach into the outcome of the Conference on Sustainable Development (UNCSD, or Rio+20).

The President's summary explains that there was general consensus among participants that DRR must feature strongly in any future framework on sustainable development arising from Rio+20, in order to build on the implementation to date of the Hyogo Framework for Action 2005‐2015: Building the Resilience of Nations and Communities to Disasters.

The summary highlights key areas of discussion and debate in two interactive panel discussions on: addressing urban risk through public investment; and increasing resilience to disasters through climate adaptation and DRR. [Summary of the GA Thematic Debate on Disaster Risk Reduction]
