UNFCCC Releases Report on NEEDS Project
24 November 2010: The UNFCCC Secretariat has released the "Synthesis report on the National Economic, Environment and Development Study (NEEDS) for Climate Change Project," which synthesizes the information contained in the reports of ten of the countries that participated in the project (FCCC/SBI/2010/INF.7).
The NEEDS project was launched in response to a request made by the 28th session of the Subsidiary Body for Implementation (SBI) for the Secretariat to provide, upon request, information to parties not included in Annex I to the Convention on the assessment of financing needs to implement mitigation and adaptation measures. The report synthesizes the information provided by the countries involved in the NEEDS project, namely: Costa Rica, Egypt, Ghana, Indonesia, Jordan, Lebanon, Maldives, Mali, Nigeria and Philippines. It includes an assessment of the financial resources needed to implement mitigation and adaptation measures in 2020 and 2050, and an assessment of the available and potential financial and policy instruments, including financial flows, to support climate change measures. The countries also provided information on the lessons learned from implementing the NEEDS project and recommendations on next steps to meet the needs identified in the country assessments. The report will be considered by the SBI at its 33rd session, to take place in Cancun, Mexico, from 30 November-4 December 2010. [The Report]
