GEF UNFCCC15 May 2013: The UNFCCC Secretariat has released a report submitted by the Global Environment Facility (GEF) (FCCC/CP/2013/INF.8) containing information on the resource status approved for non-Annex I Parties to prepare biennial update reports (BUR).

The report includes information on the dates of approval of funding and disbursement of funds, as well as the approximate date of submission of the national communications, for consideration by the 38th session of the Subsidiary Body for Implementation (SBI 38).

An annex to the report indicates that six countries have, as of 31 March 2013, requested support to GEF for BUR preparation, namely: China, India, Indonesia, Mexico, South Africa and Uruguay. All have been approved by the GEF Secretariat and are either undergoing project preparation or awaiting approval from the GEF Council.

South Africa's request is awaiting approval by the GEF Council, and Uruguay's request was approved by the GEF's Chief Executive Officer (CEO), Naoko Ishii. The UN Development Programme (UNDP) is providing this support in all cases except for the case of South Africa, where the implementing agency is the UN Environment Programme (UNEP).

At its 37th session, the Subsidiary Body for Implementation (SBI 37) invited the GEF to continue to provide information on GEF activities relating to BUR preparation for consideration by SBI 38. [Publication: GEF Report on Support for BUR Preparation]
