UNFCCC Publishes Report of Vulnerability and Adaptation Workshop for Latin America and the Caribbean
27 September 2012: The UNFCCC Secretariat has published a note containing the progress report on the work of the Consultative Group of Experts on non-Annex I National Communications (CGE), which summarizes the training workshop that was held for the Latin America and Caribbean region on vulnerability and adaptation assessment (FCCC/SBI/2012/17).
The workshop, which was held in Saint Mary's, Antigua and Barbuda, from 9-13 July 2012, aimed to enhance the capacity of national experts from the region involved in the process of the preparation of national communications, as well as to generate feedback on the draft updated CGE training materials on vulnerability and adaptation assessments. The report outlines the proceedings of the workshop, and summarizes the feedback and recommendations on the workshop, the updated CGE training materials, and the financial, technical and institutional issues relating to the preparation of national communications.
The workshop comprised seven sessions, including on: conducting vulnerability and adaptation assessments; the vulnerability and adaptation framework; climate change and socio-economic scenarios; sectoral vulnerability and adaptation assessments; and cross-sectoral and multi-sectoral integration and the presentation of methods and results in national communications.
During the workshop, participants noted that there have been improvements in the quality of countries' national communications as a result of, inter alia, enhanced technical capacity, increased stakeholder engagement and the use of more robust and advanced data and methods. They highlighted however, that constraints and barriers remain, mainly owing to the lack of sufficient data and information, technical expertise to make use of the more advanced tools available, and robust institutional arrangements.
The report will be considered by the Subsidiary Body for Implementation (SBI) at its 37th session. [Progress report on the work of the CGE: Report on the hands-on training workshop for the Latin America and Caribbean region on vulnerability and adaptation assessment]
