UNEP Risø Supports Pacific Island Country Participation in Carbon Expo
12 November 2012: The UN Environment Programme (UNEP) Risø Centre supported the participation of 12 representatives from Pacific island countries in the Carbon Expo Australasia 2012, which took place from 7-9 November 2012, in Melbourne, Australia. According to the Risø Centre, representatives from Fiji, Papua New Guinea, Samoa, Solomon Islands, Tonga and Vanuatu attended the Expo.
Support for their attendance was part of the Pacific regional Clean Development Mechanism (CDM) capacity-building activity, under the EU-funded Africa Caribbean Pacific (ACP) Multilateral Environment Agreement project (ACP-MEAs). Under this project, 24 ideas for CDM projects have been developed. The Pacific delegation's participation at the Expo aimed to promote these potential greenhouse gas emission (GHG) reduction projects, to carbon market stakeholders from Australia and New Zealand. Both countries are in the process of setting up their national carbon emission trading schemes. [UNEP Risø Press Release]
