UNEP Releases Report on Trends in Renewable Energy Investment

7 July 2010: The UN Environment Programme (UNEP) has released a publication titled "Global Trends in Renewable Energy Investment 2011," prepared for UNEP by Bloomberg New Energy Finance. According to UNEP, investments in renewables reached US$211 billion globally in 2011.According to the report, for the first time, developing economies overtook developed ones in terms of “financial new investment,” with US$72 billion invested in developing countries, and US$70 billion in developed economies. Investment in government research and development increased to over US$5 billion globally. The report also notes a decline in new financial investment in large-scale renewable energy projects in Europe, but notes that a dramatic increase in small-scale project installation, mainly solar, made up for this reduction. Globally, the report highlights a 91% overall increase in investment in small-scale projects. [Publication: Global Trends in Renewable Energy 2011]
