UNEP Publishes ACP MEAs Project Update Newsletter
December 2010: The UN Environment Programme (UNEP) and the European Commission have released a newsletter on the Multilateral Environment Agreements in African, Caribbean and Pacific countries (ACP MEAs) Project. The newsletter contains information on upcoming activities in the African, Caribbean and Pacific project hubs.
Activities being planned for implementation at the Caribbean Hub, housed at the Secretariat of the Caribbean Community (CARICOM), include the development of guidelines for mainstreaming MEAs into National Sustainable Development Strategies (NSDS) and Poverty Reduction Strategy Papers (PRSP), as well as the reproduction of memorabilia/paraphernalia to increase public awareness and access to knowledge of MEAs.
At the Pacific Hub, housed at the Secretariat of the Pacific Regional Environment Programme (SPREP), current activities include the piloting of the MEA clearinghouse mechanism in the Cook Islands, initiation on work to mainstream MEAs in national planning and budgeting processes.
The newsletter also contains an article by the European Commission EuropeAid Cooperation Office describing the challenges faced by ACP countries in fulfilling their obligations as signatories to MEAs and the importance of the ACP MEAs Project in assisting countries to overcome these challenges.
