UNEP and GEF Release Results of Country Lighting Assessments
1 December 2010: The UN Environment Programme (UNEP), together with the Global Environment Facility (GEF), has released the results of Country Lighting Assessments for over 100 countries. The Assessments, part of the en.lighten Initiative, were released on the sidelines of the Cancun Climate Change Conference.
According to UNEP, the results of the study demonstrate that the phase-out of inefficient lighting is one of the most important short-term initiatives countries can take to combat climate change and save money, as well as to address the negative effects of fuel-based lighting on health and the environment. The assessment provides estimates of potential emissions reductions and savings that can be achieved by switching to energy efficient lighting technologies across 100 countries that have not yet initiated the transition.
