UNECE/FAO Bulletin Reports on Wood Energy, Forest Certification and Timber Trade

FAO UNECE8 July 2013: The UN Economic Commission for Europe (UNECE) and the forestry department of the Food and Agriculture Organization of the UN (FAO) have published the second Forest Information Billboard to share information on forest-related projects, publications and events.

The second edition highlights the results of the joint wood energy enquiry that reveals that wood energy accounts for slightly more than 3% of the energy supply in Europe. The bulletin also features: a progress update on pan-European forest reporting; a study of the round-wood prices in the Baltic region; and data on Forest Law Enforcement, Governance and Trade (FLEGT) and EU imports of tropical timber.

Additional stories include: a report on TransparentForests, a remote sensing project to support forest certification; a publication on widening the scope of forest-based mitigation options in the tropics and on the role of forests in replacing fossil fuel energy sources; a report on financing option for wood biomass clusters in the US; and a report on public and private forest ownership in Europe.

The newsletter further announces: the Forest Stewardship Council (FSC) 2012 global market survey report; the World Business Council on Sustainable Development (WBCSD) Issue Brief on Biomass Carbon Neutrality; and a Sustainable Procurement Guide for wood and paper-based products.

Finally the bulletin announces the 20th anniversary science and policy forum of the European Forest Institute (EFI). [Publication: Forest Information Billboard No. 2]
