UNECE Investigates Role of Wood Energy in the Western Balkans
2 December 2009: The UN Economic Commission for Europe (UNECE) held a workshop in Cavtat, Croatia, from 17-20 November 2009, to identify policy options supporting cost-effective wood energy in the Western Balkans.
Representatives from Albania, Bosnia and Herzegovina, Croatia, Montenegro, Serbia and the former Yugoslav Republic of Macedonia highlighted the potential for wood energy to contribute significantly to reducing the region's reliance on imported fossil fuels and providing economic, social and environmental benefits. The resulting recommendations include: ensuring regular exchange and improving the quality of wood energy information in the region; and enhancing cross-sectoral cooperation to develop policies, strategies and practical projects for greater and more efficient use of wood energy.
