UNECE Holds Round Table on Climate Change and Transport

June 2010: Under the auspices of the UN Economic Commission for Europe (UNECE), the 151st Session of the World Forum for Harmonization of Vehicle Regulations (WP.29) held a Round Table on Climate Change and Transport in Geneva, Switzerland, on 24 June 2010.

The Round Table was organized around three sessions: an opening session underlining the link between economic growth and transport; a main session considering the potential of measures for climate change mitigation and adaptation in transport in relation with requirements of the energy sector; and a concluding session providing a summary of the debate and identifying potential scenarios and recommendations for effective measures.

The Round Table on Climate Change and Transport aimed to identify potential scenarios from which WP.29 can develop its future work programme on climate change mitigation and adaptation. Participants heard presentations, primarily focused on the European context, on, inter alia: scenarios for future carbon dioxide emissions in transport; transport, health and environment pan-European programme; achieving a low carbon transport system worldwide; reducing carbon dioxide emissions through an integrated approach; future constraints for the development of environmentally friendly vehicles; and road vehicle users' perspectives on climate change mitigation.
