UNECE Ad Hoc Group of Experts on Coal Mine Methane Provides Guidance for Coal Mine Methane Projects

UNECE Ad Hoc Group of Experts on Coal Mine Methane

2 February 2009: The UN Economic Commission for Europe (UNECE) has released a document providing guidance on concerns raised in the carbon credit market about reliable carbon credit supplies from Coal Mine Methane (CMM) projects worldwide.

This guidance emerged from the last meeting of the UNECE's Ad Hoc Group of Experts (AHGE) for CMM, which took place from 16-17 October 2008. The AHGE is made up of over 200 representatives from governments, industry, investors and international and intergovernmental organizations, and addresses mine safety issues and methane emission reduction potential. The document summarizes the ten main misconceptions about these projects and responds to them individually, as the Bureau of the AHGE believes are based partly on anecdotal evidence.
